Our Director
Michael Nelson is delighted to be a part of the esteemed music team at Glendora High School. Mr. Nelson holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from DePaul University in Chicago, IL, where he also studied viola performance under Rami Solomonov. He was honored with the Most Outstanding Teacher Award in his graduating class from DePaul. Additionally, he earned a Master's Degree in School Administration and Supervision from the University of Phoenix.
Mr. Nelson possesses teaching credentials in California, Illinois, and Colorado. He is dedicated to enhancing his teaching through continuous professional development, attending national conferences such as the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, the American String Teachers Association National Conference, SCSBOA music conference, National Mariachi Conference, etc.
His teaching career began in the Chicago Public Schools, where he taught general music to 1,200 K-6 students weekly. After a year in Chicago, Mr. Nelson moved to the Denver metro area, where he spent the next 19 years teaching orchestra in Adams 50 and Jeffco Public Schools. In Colorado, he served as the Denver Metro Representative for the Colorado American String Teachers Association, coached for the Front Range Youth Symphony, judged solo and ensemble and large group festivals, taught private violin and viola lessons, and was a guest clinician for various schools. Mr. Nelson is passionate about bringing his love for music to his students.
Mr. Nelson's musical journey began in fourth grade when he chose the viola after hearing his first teacher, Mrs. Jean Hove, play. He developed a passion for teaching in ninth grade, working with fellow students and leading orchestra rehearsals. His rich playing career includes performances with the Winnetka Chamber Orchestra, Evergreen Chamber Orchestra, Jefferson Symphony, and Little Symphony, among others. One of his fondest memories is performing with Debbie Reynolds, admiring her remarkable voice and wit.
Mr. Nelson is excited and honored to continue the proud traditions of the Glendora Orchestra program. He looks forward to meeting parents and families at the students' performances and contributing to the program's ongoing success.
